Kumquat Tree
The Inside-Out Treat: Kumquats are unique in the citrus world because you eat the whole fruit—skin and all! The thin orange skin is surprisingly sweet, while the juicy centre provides a sharp, refreshing tartness.
Fruit Profile: Small, oval, or round fruits that look like miniature oranges. They are packed with antioxidants and make a spectacular, zesty addition to salads, cocktails, or gin and tonics.
Requirements:
Size: Naturally dwarf and slow-growing, making them the perfect choice for decorative pots on a sunny Gqeberha patio.
Hardiness: One of the most cold-hardy citrus varieties, they handle the cooler nights in Walmer and Charlo with ease.
Aesthetic: Dense, dark green foliage and a massive burst of white flowers make this a beautiful "architectural" plant.
Calamondin Tree
The Marmalade Master: Often called the "Philippine Lime," the Calamondin is a cross between a Mandarin and a Kumquat. It is a prolific producer, often covered in hundreds of small fruits at once.
Fruit Profile: Tiny, round, thin-skinned oranges. While the juice is very tart (similar to a lime), the peel is sweet. This balance makes it the gold standard for gourmet marmalades, glazes for meats, and flavoured syrups.
Requirements:
Year-Round Harvest: It is incredibly prolific and often has flowers and fruit on the tree at the same time.
Versatility: Thrives in a large pot using our Potting Soil Farm Mix (R40).
Feeding: Needs regular doses of CFT Liquid Fertilizer (R80) to support its heavy, non-stop fruit production.
1. The "Clean Trunk" Look
Don't let your dwarf tree look like a messy shrub.
The Rule: Clear away any small shoots growing from the bottom 20cm of the main stem.
The Result: A clean, defined trunk makes the tree look "intentional" and elegant, highlighting the canopy.
2. Strategic "Pinching" (Canopy Shape)
Dwarf trees can sometimes grow one long, awkward branch that ruins the symmetry.
3. Surface Styling (The "Pot & Barrel" Finish)
Bare soil in a pot looks unfinished and dries out too fast in the Gqeberha wind.
The Pro Move: Top-dress your pots with The Pot & Barrel Bark Chips (R55) or smooth river pebbles.
4. Leaf Gloss (Health & Shine)
Dust and hard water spots can make leaves look dull.
The Natural Shine: Wipe the leaves occasionally with a damp cloth.
The Health Boost: Use CFT Liquid Fertilizer (R80). Healthy trees have a natural, deep-green waxy sheen that reflects the light beautifully.
