The Sweet All-Rounder: A popular South African variety known for its excellent balance of sugar and acidity. It is a reliable producer that handles the Eastern Cape climate with ease.
Fruit Profile: Medium to large fruit with a beautiful orange skin and a slight red blush. The flesh is firm, sweet, and deep orange, making it perfect for eating fresh or drying.
The Reliable Local Favourite
The Soldonne is a South African masterpiece, specifically bred to handle our fluctuating Cape temperatures. In garden design, it serves as a beautiful Midground Focal Point. It has a moderately vigorous, spreading growth habit and heart-shaped leaves that turn a soft yellow in autumn. In early spring, it erupts in a cloud of white blossoms, making it a seasonal showstopper for any backyard.
The Fruit
Appearance: Medium-sized, round-to-oval fruit with smooth, golden-yellow skin.
Texture & Taste: The flesh is firm, orange, and exceptionally sweet. It is a "clingstone" variety, meaning the juicy flesh holds to the stone, making it the "gold standard" for home drying and jam.
Growing, Care & Chilling
Chilling Requirement: Medium (approx. 400–500 hours). It performs best in the cooler valleys of the Eastern Cape but is adaptable enough for most inland suburban gardens.
Spacing: Plant 4 to 5 metres apart.
Specific Care: Requires light annual pruning in winter to maintain its shape and encourage new fruiting wood.
Harvest: Early-to-mid-season; ripening in late November to early December.
