The Deep Crimson Classic - The Early Red One is a high-colour mutation of the Starking (Red Delicious). It is an upright, "spur-type" tree, meaning it produces fruit on short, stubby branches. This makes it a Space-Saving Hero for smaller gardens. In design, use it to create a formal "row" or as a structured Feature Canopy in a sunny courtyard.
The Fruit
Appearance: Deep, solid crimson-red skin with the classic "five-pointed" bottom characteristic of Delicious apples.
Texture & Taste: Soft, sweet, and mild with very low acidity. The flesh is cream-coloured and fine-grained.
Best For: Fresh eating for those who prefer a sweeter, softer apple over a tart, crunchy one.
Growing, Care & Chilling
Chilling Requirement: High (approx. 700–900 hours). It needs a proper winter "rest" to fruit well, making it ideal for the mountainous or high-altitude areas of the Cape.
Spacing: Plant 3 to 4 metres apart due to its compact growth habit.
Specific Care: Sensitive to heatwaves; ensure it is well-mulched to keep the roots cool during the January sun.
Harvest: Early-to-mid-season; ripening in late January to early February.
