🍎 Our Select Apple Tree Varieties
Choosing the right apple tree depends on your "chill hours" (cold winter nights) and space. Most apples produce better with a cross-pollinator nearby!
. Anna Apple Tree
The Low-Chill Champion: Specifically bred for warmer climates, the Anna is the absolute best choice for coastal Gqeberha. It doesn't need a freezing winter to produce a massive crop.
Fruit Profile: Large, attractive fruit with a light green skin and a red blush. The flavour is sweet, crisp, and slightly tart—very similar to a Gala apple.
Requirements:
- Full Sun: At least 6–8 hours a day.
- Pollination: Self-fertile, but yields significantly more if planted near a Golden Delicious.
- Water: Regular watering, especially while the fruit is setting.
Royal Beaut Apple Tree
The Royal Red: A beautiful, deep-red mutation of the Royal Gala. It is prized for its consistent colour and exceptionally sweet, crunchy texture.
Fruit Profile: Intense red skin with creamy, firm flesh. It is one of the most popular dessert apples for lunchboxes.
Requirements:
- Chill Hours: Moderate; performs well in the Eastern Cape.
- Feeding: Responds excellently to our CFT Liquid Fertilizer during the growing season.
- Spacing: Ensure good airflow between trees to prevent mildew in our humid coastal air.
Early Red Apple Tree
The Summer Treat: As the name suggests, this variety ripens earlier in the season than most, giving you a head start on your harvest.
Fruit Profile: Medium-sized, deep red fruit with a classic "snow-white" flesh. It is sweet, juicy, and perfect for eating straight off the tree.
Requirements:
- Soil: Prefers well-draining soil enriched with our Potting Soil Farm Mix.
- Climate: Highly adaptable to various South African conditions.
- Pruning: Requires annual winter pruning to maintain its shape and fruit quality.
Granny Smith Apple Tree
The Versatile Classic: Known worldwide for its bright green skin and famous "zing," the Granny Smith is a hardy, reliable producer.
Fruit Profile: Hard, crisp, and very tart. It’s the ultimate baking apple (it keeps its shape in pies!) and stores longer than almost any other variety.
Requirements:
- Sun: Loves a long, sunny growing season to develop its sugars.
- Pollination: A great universal pollinator for other apple trees in your garden.
- Hardiness: Very tough and resistant to most common apple pests.
Golden Delicious Apple Tree
The Sweet All-Rounder: A garden staple because of its high yields and incredibly sweet, honey-like flavour.
Fruit Profile: Smooth, yellow-gold skin. The flesh is fine-grained and sweet, making it a favourite for kids and for making homemade apple sauce.
Requirements:
- Pollination: Often called the "Friendly Neighbour" because it helps pollinate almost all other apple varieties (especially the Anna).
- Water: Needs consistent moisture; use Bark Chip Mulch (R55) to keep the roots cool and damp.
- Care: Thin the fruit out in early summer if the branches are too heavy to prevent snapping.
