🌰 The Majestic Pecan Nut Selection
The Pecan is the "giant" of the nut world. These are magnificent, deciduous trees that provide deep summer shade and a massive harvest of buttery, high-protein nuts every autumn. At "Die Plaas," we stock XL specimens to give your orchard a significant head start.
Wichita Pecan Nut Trees
The Southern Classic: Pecans are exceptionally well-suited to the South African climate. They are long-lived trees that can produce for over 100 years, making them a true investment for future generations.
Nut Profile: Large, elongated nuts with a relatively thin "paper-shell" that is easy to crack. The kernels are rich, oily, and sweet—the gold standard for pies, pralines, and healthy snacking.
Requirements:
 - Landscape Value: These are XL trees that grow into massive, spreading canopies. They are perfect for large gardens or farmsteads where they can act as a primary shade tree for a patio or driveway.
 - Climate: Very hardy and frost-tolerant. They love the long, hot Gqeberha summers to help the nuts fill and ripen.
 - Soil: Pecans have a very deep taproot and require deep, fertile soil. We recommend digging a large planting hole and enriching it with our Triple Mix Farm Soil (R50) and Potting Soil Farm Mix (R40).
 - Water: "Water makes the nut." Pecans require significant water during the summer months (December to February) to ensure the kernels are plump and well-developed.
 - Zinc: Pecans are "zinc-hungry." Use our CFT Liquid Fertilizer (R80) regularly to prevent leaf-mottle and ensure a healthy green canopy.
📍 Pot & Barrel "Die Plaas" Tip:
Pecans are wind-pollinated, meaning they don't rely on bees. However, because they produce male and female flowers at slightly different times, planting two trees (or ensuring a neighbour has one) will dramatically increase your harvest.Â

Pecan trees (Carya illinoinensis) are majestic deciduous trees that thrive in our local conditions. At The Pot & Barrel Nursery, we believe every large garden should have one. Here is how to ensure yours succeeds:
1. Climate & Positioning
The Eastern Cape is ideal because Pecans require "chilling hours" in winter to set fruit and high heat in summer to ripen the nuts. Choose a site away from power lines and foundations, as these trees can reach heights of 20m+.
2. Planting Technique
The Hole: Dig a deep hole (at least 1m x 1m). Pecans have a long taproot that needs loose soil to establish quickly.
The Soil: Mix your excavated soil with The Pot & Barrel Premium Compost.
The Settling: Ensure there are no air pockets around the roots by watering heavily during the backfilling process.
3. Essential Care
Irrigation: Pecans are native to river floodplains. In Gqeberha, they need deep weekly watering, especially during the nut-filling stage (late summer).
Nutrition: Apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring. Pecans are prone to Zinc deficiency in our alkaline coastal soils—look for "Zinc rosette" (small, yellowing leaves at the tips) and treat with a foliar spray if needed.
Mulching: Use Bark Chips or Mulch (available at our nursery) to retain moisture and mimic the forest floor.
4. Harvesting
In autumn, the shucks will split open, and the nuts will drop. Simply gather them from the ground, dry them in a well-ventilated area for two weeks, and enjoy!
