The Tangy Evergreen Favourite - The Granny Smith is a hardy, vigorous "workhorse." It has a spreading habit and is one of the most Wind-Resistant apple varieties, making it a great Skyline Layer. Its bright green leaves stay on the tree longer than most, providing a lush green backdrop for a significant portion of the year.
The Fruit
Appearance: Iconic bright, waxy green skin with white lenticels (dots).
Texture & Taste: Super-crunchy, hard flesh with a famous sharp, acidic tang. It is the most refreshing apple on a hot day.
Best For: Everything. It is the gold standard for baking (it doesn't mush), juicing, and eating fresh.
Growing, Care & Chilling
Chilling Requirement: Medium (approx. 500–600 hours). Highly adaptable across most of the Eastern Cape.
Spacing: Plant 5 to 6 metres apart to allow for its spreading canopy.
Specific Care: It is the ultimate pollinator. If you have other apple trees, a Granny Smith nearby will almost always improve their yields.
Harvest: Late-season; ripening in March to April.
