☕ The Home Brew: Arabica Coffee Tree Selection
Ever dreamed of harvesting, roasting, and brewing your very own cup of coffee? The Arabica Coffee Tree (Coffea arabica) is not just a source of caffeine; it is one of the most beautiful ornamental shrubs you can add to your garden or patio.
Arabica Coffee Trees
The Gourmet Crop: Arabica is the gold standard of coffee, prized for its smooth, complex flavour and lower acidity. These trees are evergreen, with glossy, deep-green leaves that look spectacular year-round.
Fruit Profile: Produces fragrant, jasmine-scented white flowers followed by small green berries that turn a brilliant "cherry red" when ripe. Each cherry typically contains two coffee beans.
Requirements:
- Climate: Coffee trees love a subtropical environment. In Gqeberha, they thrive in dappled shade or bright, indirect light. They must be protected from frost and harsh, drying winds.
- Placement: Perfect for a sheltered veranda, a north-facing patio, or as an understory plant beneath larger trees at "Die Plaas."
- Soil: They prefer rich, slightly acidic, and well-draining soil. We recommend planting with our Potting Soil Farm Mix (R40) and adding a layer of Mulch Compost (R40).
- Water: Keep the soil consistently moist but never waterlogged. They love humidity—if keeping yours in a pot, a light misting during dry PE days will keep the leaves glossy.
- Feeding: Use our CFT Liquid Fertilizer (R80) every few weeks during the growing season to encourage heavy flowering and berry sets.
📍 Pot & Barrel "Die Plaas" Tip:
Coffee trees are exceptionally well-suited to container gardening. If you have limited space, a 10L or 20L pot is perfect for a productive coffee shrub. Once the cherries turn deep red, harvest them, remove the pulp, dry the beans in the sun, and you’re ready to roast!
