🍍 The Coastal Classic: Pineapple Selection
The Pineapple (Ananas comosus) is the ultimate "set-and-forget" edible for Gqeberha. These sculptural, bromeliad-style plants are incredibly drought-tolerant, wind-hardy, and salt-tolerant—making them the perfect choice for coastal gardens from Summerstrand to Sardinia Bay.Â
Queen Pineapple (Sweet & Golden)
The Gourmet Dessert Pineapple: The Queen is the most popular variety in the Eastern Cape. It is smaller than the smooth-leaved varieties but significantly sweeter, with a crisp, deep-yellow flesh.
Fruit Profile: Known for its intense fragrance and high sugar content. The core is small and tender, meaning you can eat almost the entire fruit.
Requirements:
Climate: Loves the humid, frost-free air of the PE coast. They are remarkably drought-resistant once established.
Sun: Requires full sun (at least 6–8 hours) to develop the sugars and iconic golden colour.
Soil: They have a shallow root system and must have excellent drainage. They thrive in sandy soils. We recommend planting in our Triple Mix Farm Soil (R50) mixed with a bit of extra sand or grit.
Watering: Very low water requirements. Water into the "heart" (the centre of the leaves) occasionally during dry spells.
Space: Perfect for rockeries, narrow garden borders, or as a striking "architectural" pot plant on a sunny patio.
Harvest: Patience is required! It can take 18–24 months for a plant to produce its first golden fruit.Â
📍 Pot & Barrel "Die Plaas" Tip:
Pineapples are "heavy feeders" through their leaves. To speed up fruit production, use our CFT Liquid Fertilizer (R80) as a foliar spray (spraying it directly onto the leaves) every 4 weeks. Once you’ve harvested your pineapple, don’t throw away the top! Twist off the leafy crown, let it dry for a few days, and plant it to grow a brand-new tree for free.Â
