The Sweet "Honey" Apple - Despite the name, the Golden Delicious is not related to the Red Delicious. It is a productive, easy-to-grow tree with a moderately spreading habit. In design, its lighter green foliage and yellow fruit provide a beautiful Colour Contrast against darker evergreens like Sweet Viburnum.
The Fruit
Appearance: Bright yellow-to-gold skin, sometimes with a pink blush.
Texture & Taste: Sweet, honey-like flavour with a fine-textured, crisp flesh. It is very aromatic.
Best For: Apple pies, sauces, and drying. It resists browning better than many other varieties.
Growing, Care & Chilling
Chilling Requirement: Medium (approx. 600–700 hours). Thrives in temperate Cape climates.
Spacing: Plant 4 to 5 metres apart.
Specific Care: The skin is thin and can bruise easily; handle the fruit with care during harvest.
Harvest: Mid-to-late season; ready in late February to March.
