The "Gourmet" Red Mutation - A superior mutation of the Royal Gala, the Royal Beaut is a world-class dessert apple. It is a moderately vigorous tree with a neat, spreading habit. In design terms, it works beautifully as a Midground Focal Point. Its consistent shape and reliable spring flowering make it one of the most "professional" looking trees for a home orchard.
The Fruit
Appearance: Striking, full-red skin with faint striping. It is arguably the most beautiful apple in the collection.
Texture & Taste: Extremely crunchy and juicy with a high sugar content and a hint of vanilla.
Best For: The ultimate "lunchbox" apple. It holds its crunch well even out of the fridge
Growing, Care & Chilling
Chilling Requirement: Medium to High (approx. 600–800 hours). It prefers the cooler inland valleys of the Eastern Cape (like the Langkloof or Grahamstown) to develop its deep red colour.
Spacing: Plant 4 to 5 metres apart.
Specific Care: Needs a pollinator. It pairs perfectly with Granny Smith or Golden Delicious.
Harvest: Mid-season; typically ready in February.
