🥭 Our Premium Mango Tree Selection
The Mango (Mangifera indica) is the "King of Fruits." While traditionally a subtropical crop, several varieties thrive in the sunny, frost-free microclimates of Gqeberha. Our trees are grafted for early fruiting and selected for their excellent disease resistance.
The Hardy All-Rounder: This is the most widely grown commercial mango in the world because of its incredible resilience. It is highly resistant to anthracnose (fungal spots) and handles transport and handling better than any other variety.
Fruit Profile: Large, oval fruit with a stunning dark red-to-purple blush. The flesh is firm, fibrous, and sweet—perfect for those who like a classic, "meaty" mango that holds its shape in fruit salads.
Requirements:
- Climate: The most wind-tolerant of our mangos; a great choice for the breezier parts of Walmer.
- Yield: An exceptionally heavy and consistent bearer.
The Gourmet South African Favourite: A home-grown hero! The Heidi is widely considered to have the best flavour profile of any mango grown in South Africa.
Fruit Profile: A beautiful heart-shaped fruit with a yellow-green skin and a distinct red-purple blush. The flesh is completely fibreless, buttery-smooth, and intensely sweet with a hint of spice.
Requirements:
- Care: Slightly more sensitive to cold than the Tommy Atkins; it loves a warm, north-facing wall or a sheltered courtyard at "Die Plaas."
- Watering: Needs consistent deep watering during the fruit-set stage (September to November).
The Late-Season Delight: If you want to extend your mango season into late summer and autumn, the Kent is your best choice.
Fruit Profile: Large, greenish-yellow fruit with a dark red shoulder. Like the Heidi, the Kent is fibreless and incredibly juicy with a rich, sugary-sweet flavour.
Requirements:
- Harvest: Ripens later than the Tommy Atkins, providing fresh fruit when others have finished.
- Pruning: A large, vigorous grower that benefits from annual pruning to keep the fruit within reach. Use our CFT Liquid Fertilizer (R80) to support its rapid growth.
Important for All Three Varieties
The First 2 Years: Even though they are "hardy," mangoes are tropical. Cover young trees with frost fleece in June/July if you live in inland areaswhere it gets a bit colder.
Staking: Always stake your young mango trees. The Eastern Cape winds can "rock" a young tree, breaking the delicate new feeder roots.
Pollination: While they are self-fertile, planting a Lavender or Wild Garlic border at the base will attract the bees needed to ensure every flower becomes a fruit.
📍 Pot & Barrel "Die Plaas" Tip:
Mangos hate "wet feet"! When planting your mango, ensure the soil is extremely well-drained. We recommend digging a deep hole and mixing in our Triple Mix Farm Soil (R50). To encourage a massive harvest, avoid high-nitrogen fertilizers once the tree starts flowering—switch to our CFT Liquid Fertilizer to focus the tree's energy on fruit production rather than just leaves.
