🍈 The Tropical Powerhouse: Carica Sweet Papaya Selection
The Carica Papaya (Carica papaya 'Sweet') is the ultimate choice for the impatient gardener. Known for its rapid growth and delicious, antioxidant-rich fruit, a healthy Papaya tree can go from a sapling to a fruit-bearer in as little as 10 to 12 months.
The Gourmet Superfood: Our 'Sweet' variety is selected for its deep orange flesh, small seed cavity, and exceptionally high sugar content. It is a compact, vigorous grower that brings a lush, tropical aesthetic to any Gqeberha backyard.
Fruit Profile: Produces large, pear-shaped fruits with a smooth skin that turns golden-yellow when ripe. The flesh is firm, succulent, and sweet—perfect for breakfast bowls, Thai-style salads, or healthy desserts.
Requirements:
- Climate: Papayas love the warmth! They thrive in the humid, frost-free air of Walmer and Summerstrand. While they love the sun, they should be protected from the harshest direct PE salt spray.
- Sun: Requires full sun (at least 6–8 hours daily) to develop the sugars in the fruit.
- Soil: Excellent drainage is non-negotiable. Papayas are prone to root rot in heavy clay. We strongly recommend planting in a mound using our Triple Mix Farm Soil mixed with Potting Soil Farm Mix.
- Water: Keep the soil consistently moist but never soggy. They are "thirsty" plants during the heat of February.
- Feeding: These are heavy feeders! Use our CFT Liquid Fertilizer (R80) every 4 weeks to support their rapid upward growth and heavy fruit set.
- Pollination: Our Carica Sweet selection is generally bisexual (hermaphroditic), meaning you typically only need one tree to produce fruit!
📍 Pot & Barrel "Die Plaas" Tip:
Papayas have a relatively shallow root system and can be top-heavy when loaded with fruit. We recommend planting them in a spot sheltered from the strongest winds or providing a sturdy stake during the first year of growth. To prevent "wet feet," always mulch with Bark Chips (R55) to keep the stem base dry while keeping the roots hydrated.
