🥑 Our Premium Avocado Tree Selection
The Avocado (Persea americana) is the "green gold" of the garden. Whether you prefer the classic smooth-skinned varieties or the rich, nutty flavour of the dark-pebbly types, our grafted trees are selected for their high oil content and creamy texture.
Fuerte Avocado Tree
The South African Classic: Fuerte is the legendary "green-skin" avocado we all know and love. It is highly popular because it is more cold-tolerant than most tropical varieties, making it a reliable choice for Gqeberha winters.
Fruit Profile: Pear-shaped with smooth, thin green skin that stays green even when ripe. The flesh is exceptionally creamy with a distinct, mild nutty flavour.
Requirements:
- Harvest: Provides a long harvesting season from autumn through to spring.
- Placement: Thrives in a sunny spot with protection from the harshest coastal winds.
Pinkerton Avocado Tree
The Heavy Producer: Pinkerton is famous for its exceptionally small pit, which means you get more "fruit for your money." It is a semi-dwarf grower, making it the best choice for smaller Walmer gardens.
Fruit Profile: Long, pear-shaped fruit with a slightly pebbly green skin. The flesh is remarkably smooth, buttery, and slow to brown once cut.
Requirements:
- Yield: Known for being a very consistent and heavy bearer from a young age.
- Size: Its compact growth habit makes it easy to manage and harvest without a ladder.
Hass Avocado Tree
The Global Favourite: Prized worldwide for its rich, intense flavour and its "built-in" ripeness indicator. If you love a thick, buttery avo on toast, this is the tree for you.
Fruit Profile: Oval fruit with thick, pebbly skin that turns from green to dark purple/black when ready to eat. The flesh is rich, nutty, and very high in healthy oils.
Requirements:
- Shelf Life: The thick, durable skin protects the fruit and gives it an excellent shelf life after picking.
- Feeding: Responds beautifully to our CFT Liquid Fertilizer (R80) for a lush, dark green canopy.
Lamb Hass Avocado Tree
The Late-Season Star: A "cousin" of the classic Hass, the Lamb Hass produces significantly larger fruit and ripens later in the season, extending your avocado harvest into the summer months.
Fruit Profile: Similar to Hass but larger and more "squared-off" at the shoulders. It features the same delicious, dark-pebbly skin that turns black when ripe.
Requirements:
- Growth: A more upright, compact grower than the standard Hass, perfect for boundary planting.
- Resilience: Shows excellent resistance to wind and heat, making it a "tough" addition to the urban farm.
📍 Pot & Barrel "Die Plaas" Tip:
Avocados are "allergic" to wet feet! Poor drainage is the #1 reason young trees fail. We recommend planting them in a raised mound using our Triple Mix Farm Soil (R50). To keep your tree happy, use Bark Chip Mulch (R55) to keep the roots cool, but ensure the mulch stays a few centimetres away from the trunk to prevent rot.
