Eureka Lemon Tree
The Kitchen Essential: The most popular lemon in South Africa because it is "ever-bearing," meaning it can produce fruit almost all year round. It is a vigorous, upright grower that is highly productive even in smaller gardens.
Fruit Profile: Large, juicy, and relatively seedless with a thick, oil-rich skin. The high acid content makes it the gold standard for cooking, baking, and summer lemonades.
Requirements: Needs a full-sun position and regular feeding with our CFT Liquid Fertilizer (R80) to prevent yellowing leaves.
Bearss Lime Tree (Persian Lime)
The Gourmet Lime: Also known as the Persian Lime, this variety produces much larger, juicier fruit than the tiny Mexican "Key" lime. It is more cold-hardy and better suited to our Eastern Cape winters.
Fruit Profile: Seedless, thin-skinned, and juice-heavy. It has a true, sharp lime punch—essential for cocktails, dressings, and Thai-style cooking.
Requirements: Prefers a slightly sheltered spot. Feed regularly with micronutrients to prevent "mottled" leaves.
To keep your Eureka Lemons and Bearss Limes in peak condition for the Gqeberha climate, focus on these three vital health checks.
The "Yellow Leaf" Warning
If leaves turn yellow but the veins stay green, your tree is likely suffering from Iron or Magnesium deficiency (Chlorosis).
The Fix: Use Pot & Barrel CFT Liquid Fertilizer. For a quick boost, a teaspoon of Epsom salts dissolved in water can work wonders.
2. Water Management
Citrus have shallow roots. They hate "wet feet" but cannot tolerate bone-dry soil.
The Shield: Always use Bark Chip Mulch (R55) to keep the roots cool and damp.
3. Pest Watch (Citrus Psylla)
If you see small "bubbles" or pits on new leaves, it's Citrus Psylla.
Pot & Barrel Tip: If your tree is dropping tiny, pea-sized fruit, it’s usually "stress drop" caused by erratic watering or a sudden Gqeberha heatwave. Consistent watering is the secret to a heavy harvest!
