The Resilient Choice: Originally from Greece, the Bebeco has become a South African favourite because it is less prone to "fruit drop" during erratic spring weather.
Fruit Profile: High-quality, large fruit with a very firm texture and a sweet, aromatic scent. It has an excellent shelf life compared to other apricots.
The Cape Bebeco (also known simply as Bebeco) is a high-yielding, semi-vigorous tree with a semi-upright growth habit. Originally from Greece, it has become one of South Africa's most popular commercial and home garden cultivars. In your garden design, it serves as a robust Background Layer or a standalone Feature Canopy, offering a dense, manageable structure that reaches its full bloom in late August. It is self-fertile, meaning you only need one tree to get a full harvest, though cross-pollination can further boost its already impressive yields.
The Fruit
Appearance: Large, oval fruits with dark yellow skin that develops a beautiful red blush where exposed to the sun.
Texture & Taste: This is a freestone variety with a "melting" juicy texture and dark yellow flesh. It is celebrated for its excellent eating quality and rich, aromatic sweetness.
Best For: Exceptional for fresh eating, but its firm, high-quality flesh also makes it ideal for canning, drying, and making preserves.
Growing, Care & Chilling
Chilling Requirement: Low to Medium (approx. 450–600 hours). It is specifically prized for its ability to produce sweet fruit in warmer climates where other varieties might struggle, making it perfect for most Eastern Cape suburban gardens.
Spacing: Recommended planting distance is 4 to 5 metres apart.
Eastern Cape Care:
Position: Plant in full sun in a spot sheltered from strong coastal winds.
Soil: Thrives in well-draining, slightly acidic loam. If you have heavy clay or sand, amend with organic compost or plant on a slight mound to prevent waterlogging.
Pruning: Requires minimal pruning compared to other types. Prune in late winter for structure and in summer after harvest to manage size and encourage new fruiting wood.
Harvest: An early-season variety, with the first pick usually ready by the first week of December.
