The Low-Chill Coastal Champion - The Anna is a miracle for South African gardeners in warmer climates. Originally developed in Israel, it is a vigorous, upright grower that doesn't need a freezing winter to produce fruit. In garden design, it serves as a fantastic Vertical Accent or a narrow Background Layer. Its light green foliage and blush-pink spring blossoms make it a decorative and functional addition to any Eastern Cape backyard.
The Fruit
Appearance: Unique, elongated fruit (similar to a Red Delicious) with light green skin covered in a beautiful red blush.
Texture & Taste: Crisp, white flesh with a sweet-tart, refreshing flavour.
Best For: Eating fresh, slicing into summer salads, or making "light" apple sauce.
Growing, Care & Chilling
Chilling Requirement: Ultra-Low (approx. 200–300 hours). This is the #1 choice for coastal Gqeberha or East London where winters are mild.
Spacing: Plant 4 to 5 metres apart.
Specific Care: It is a heavy producer and may need fruit thinning in early summer to ensure the apples reach a good size and branches don't snap.
Harvest: Very early! Ready in late December to January.
