🌰 The Heritage Walnut Selection
Walnuts are the "royalty" of the nut orchard. They are majestic, long-lived trees that increase the value of any property while providing a lifetime of heart-healthy harvests.
English Walnut Tree (Juglans regia)
The Gourmet Classic: Also known as the Persian Walnut, this is the premier variety for home orchards. It is prized for its thin, "easy-crack" shell and large, creamy kernels.
Nut Profile: High-quality, mild-flavoured nuts with a rich oil content. Perfect for baking, snacking, or making traditional green walnut preserves.
Requirements:
 - Landscape Value: Grows into a magnificent, wide-spreading shade tree with beautiful silver-grey bark. Ideal for a large garden or as a focal point at "Die Plaas."
 - Climate: Very hardy and frost-tolerant. It performs best in the deeper, fertile soils found in the Walmer and Lovemore Heights areas.
 - Soil: Requires deep, well-draining soil to accommodate its significant taproot. We highly recommend digging in our Triple Mix Farm Soil (R50) to a depth of at least 1 metre.
Pollination: Most varieties are self-fertile, but planting more than one tree will significantly increase your overall yield.
Care: Walnuts are "self-mulching" trees—their fallen leaves provide a natural carpet that suppresses weeds. Enhance this with our Bark Chip Mulch (R55) during the first few years of growth.
📍 Pot & Barrel "Die Plaas" Tip:
Walnut trees produce a natural substance called juglone in their roots and leaves, which can inhibit the growth of some other plants nearby (like tomatoes or azaleas). We recommend planting your walnut tree in its own dedicated space where it can reach its full, majestic potential as a standalone "Giving Tree."

The English Walnut (Juglans regia) is a staple of the "Giving Garden." While they require a bit of patience, a well-cared-for Walnut tree is a centerpiece that increases property value and food security.
1. Climate Requirements
Walnuts need "chill hours" during winter to go dormant and reset for spring. The Gqeberha and inland Eastern Cape winters provide just enough cold, while our hot summers ensure the nuts ripen fully.
2. Planting & Soil
The Taproot: Walnuts have a massive taproot. Avoid planting them in shallow soil or over rocky shelves.
Preparation: Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball. Mix your soil with The Pot & Barrel Soil Mix to ensure it's nutrient-rich from day one.
Juglone Caution: Be mindful that Walnuts release juglone from their roots, which can inhibit the growth of certain plants like tomatoes or azaleas nearby.
3. Ongoing Care
Watering: In the first two years, consistent deep watering is vital. Once established, they are moderately drought-tolerant but produce better nuts with regular irrigation.
Feeding: Use a balanced organic fertilizer in early spring as the buds begin to swell.
Pruning: Walnuts generally shape themselves well, but you can prune in late winter to remove dead wood or low-hanging branches.
4. Harvesting
Your tree will start producing between years 5 and 7. When the green husks split and the brown shells are visible, the nuts are ready. Gather them, remove the husks (wear gloves—they stain!), and dry the nuts in a cool, airy place.
