The Heidi Mango: South Africa’s Homegrown Dessert King
A local legend developed right here in South Africa, the 'Heidi' is prized by connoisseurs for its unmatched flavour. It is a slightly more "boutique" choice that rewards the patient gardener with world-class fruit.
Design Role: The Midground Focal Point. Because Heidi is a naturally smaller, slower-growing tree, it fits perfectly into the "Personality Layer." Use it as a standalone specimen in a sunny, sheltered courtyard.
Cape Performance: Prefers the heat. In the Eastern Cape, it must be planted in a north-facing "sun trap" to ensure the fruit ripens fully. It is slightly more sensitive to cold than the Tommy Atkins.
The Fruit: Distinctive heart-shaped fruit with a yellow-and-red blush. The flesh is completely fibre-less, buttery, and incredibly sweet.
Growth Habit: Compact and manageable, making it the best variety for smaller suburban gardens or large large-scale containers.
Heidi: The "Gourmet Dessert King"
If taste is your only priority, the Heidi is the winner. It is a South African variety specifically bred for a superior eating experience.
The Look: Unique, heart-shaped (cordate) fruit. It has a beautiful yellow-gold skin with a bright red-pink blush when ripe.
The Taste: This is a fibre-less mango. The flesh is buttery, smooth, and incredibly rich. It has a high sugar content and a complex, "peachy" aroma.
Fruiting Window: A Mid-season bearer. You’ll typically be picking these in February.
Yield: It can be a "shy" bearer, meaning it might produce a massive crop one year and a smaller one the next. It rewards the patient gardener with the best-tasting fruit in the country.
How to Grow & Care for the Heidi
Spacing: Due to its compact nature, it is perfect for smaller gardens. Space them 3 to 4 metres apart.
Growth Rate: Slow to moderate. It stays naturally smaller and "bushier," making it ideal for large 100L containers on a sunny patio.
Watering: More sensitive to "wet feet." Ensure your planting hole has excellent drainage. If you have heavy clay soil, plant the Heidi on a slight "mound."
Feeding: Needs a high-potassium fertiliser (like 3:1:5) every 6 weeks from flowering until harvest to ensure those sugar levels stay high.
Climate Care: In the Eastern Cape, plant this against a north-facing wall. The reflected heat from the wall helps the fruit ripen to that perfect "buttery" consistency.
Pro Tip: If the tree over-produces, thin out the fruit (remove the smallest ones) so the tree can put all its energy into making the remaining mangoes massive and sweet.
