Croton Plants: The Ultimate Splash of Tropical Colour
If you want to bring the vibrant hues of a Gqeberha sunset into your home or onto a sheltered patio, Crotons (Codiaeum variegatum) are the perfect choice. Known for their bold, leathery leaves splashed with brilliant yellow, fiery orange, and deep red, these hardy tropical shrubs offer unmatched texture and "colour-pop."
At The Pot & Barrel Nursery, we love Crotons because they are "light-hungry" plants—the more bright, indirect light they receive, the more intense and brilliant their leaf colours become. They thrive in our coastal humidity and make a magnificent statement in our Concrete Pots.
Our Curated Croton Collection
Each variety offers a unique leaf shape and colour palette to suit your style:
A sophisticated and elegant variety. It features long, slender leaves with a base of deep green, heavily speckled and striped with bright yellow and hints of orange. It’s a fantastic choice for adding fine texture and a "speckled" look to your indoor jungle.
A true showstopper! This variety is known for its broader leaves and a dramatic shift in colour. You’ll see a beautiful blend of green and yellow that transitions into deep oranges and reds as the plant matures. It’s one of the best for creating a warm, autumnal glow year-round.
Perhaps the most unique in our collection, 'Mrs. Iceton' features a softer, more pastel palette. Instead of the usual neons, the leaves emerge in shades of soft apricot, salmon, and pale yellow, eventually darkening to a deep bronze. It’s often called the "Appleblossom" Croton for its delicate, blooming-orchard appearance.
Ideal for those who prefer a crisp, clean aesthetic. This variety has thin, ribbon-like leaves that create a fountain-like effect. The striking contrast between the lime-green and sunny-yellow variegation makes it a perfect brightener for semi-shaded corners or modern office spaces.
The name says it all! This variety features small, narrow, deep-green leaves that look as if they’ve been sprinkled with gold paint. It is one of the hardiest Crotons, making it a fantastic choice for beginners. Its fine texture and bright "sparkle" make it a perfect filler for mixed tropical containers.
Light is Life: Place them in the brightest indirect light possible. If new leaves stay green, they are "telling" you they need more light!
Stay Humid: Being tropical, they love humidity. Mist the leaves regularly or group them with your Ferns and Peace Lilies.
Consistency is Key: Crotons can be sensitive to sudden changes. Keep them away from cold drafts and try not to move them once they’ve settled.
The Right Foundation: Use our Indoor Potting Mix (R45) to ensure the fast drainage they require.
We have a large selection of Croton Plants available from R115 each.
