The Leccino: The Stately Classic
Growth Habit: In contrast to the Frantoio, the Leccino has a more upright and spreading growth habit. It is a stately, well-branched tree that creates a denser, more "bushy" canopy.
Form: It is incredibly vigorous and tends to grow more quickly in its early years. Its dense foliage and silver-toned leaves make it the superior choice if you are looking to create a high-impact screen or a formal hedge. Because it grows more upright, it provides excellent vertical structure to a landscape design.
Size: It can eventually reach heights of 6–9 metres in the ground, but like the Frantoio, its height is easily managed with seasonal pruning.

Upright, vigorous, and a hardy pollination partner.
Design & Landscaping Ideas
The Silver Screen: Thanks to its upright and spreading habit, the Leccino is the superior choice for a formal hedge or privacy screen. Plant them in a row along a fence line to create a dense, silvery-green wall that handles the Gqeberha wind with ease.
Backyard Anchor: Use the Leccino’s stately form to anchor the corners of your garden. Its denser canopy provides excellent shade for a garden bench or a morning coffee nook.
The Modern Statement: If you prefer a "Lollipop" or topiary look, the Leccino’s vigorous growth makes it easy to prune into a tight, formal ball atop a straight trunk.
Planting & Care Tips
Spacing: If planting as a hedge, space them about 2-3 metres apart. For a grove, 6 metres is ideal to ensure plenty of air circulation.
Soil Preparation: Leccinos are vigorous growers. Use Agricultural Gypsum to break up heavy clay and mix in a bag of Triple Mix Farm Soil to give them the fuel they need to reach their height.
Fertilising: Being a fast grower, it loves regular feeding. Apply CFT CalMag in early spring to strengthen the cell walls of that new, upright growth.
Winter Chilling: Both varieties need a "chilling period" (temperatures below 10°C) during our Gqeberha winters to trigger flower production for the next season.
