The Mediterranean Essential: Why Every Gqeberha Garden Needs an Olive Tree
There is a reason the Olive tree (Olea europaea) has been a symbol of peace, wisdom, and luxury for millennia. Beyond their historic roots, these trees are arguably the most practical choice for a "Giving Garden" in the Eastern Cape. This week, The Pot & Barrel Nursery is proud to showcase a fresh arrival of the two most prestigious Italian varieties: the Frantoio and the Leccino.
Why Olives Thrive in the "Windy City"
Gardening in Gqeberha presents unique challenges—salt spray, sandy soil, and our legendary winds. Olive trees are evolutionarily designed for this. Their small, waxy, silvery-green leaves are built to minimize moisture loss and offer very little wind resistance, allowing them to remain upright and lush when other trees might struggle.
Design & Styling: The Architectural Choice
At The Pot & Barrel Nursery, we believe in pairing the best plants with the best foundations.
The Potted Statement: Olive trees are the undisputed kings of container gardening. Their silver-toned foliage provides a stunning contrast against the raw, industrial texture of our Signature Cement Pots. Placing a pair of potted olives at a front entrance or along a sunny pool deck creates an immediate "Old World" estate feel.
Low-Maintenance Screening: If you are looking for a privacy screen that doesn't require constant watering, olives are your answer. They can be pruned into a formal hedge or left to grow into a soft, shimmering screen that protects your patio from the wind.

The Frantoio: Often called the "Gold Standard" of olives, this variety is prized globally for its high-quality oil. It is a robust, self-fertile grower that produces a fruity, aromatic harvest. If you only have space for one tree, the Frantoio is a heavy-cropping superstar.
The Leccino: Known for its sleek, upright growth and slightly more delicate flavour profile. While it is a beautiful standalone tree, it truly shines when planted near a Frantoio. They act as pollination partners, and having both in your garden can significantly increase your overall fruit yield.
Success Starts in the Soil
While olives are incredibly hardy, they have one non-negotiable requirement: perfect drainage. They simply cannot tolerate "wet feet."
When planting your olives, we recommend using Agricultural Gypsum to break up any heavy clay and ensure the soil remains porous. For potted specimens, our Premium Triple Mix provides the ideal balance of nutrients and drainage to keep your trees thriving for decades.
