🍌 The Tropical Favorite: Williams Banana Selection
The Williams Banana (Musa acuminata 'Williams') is a prized cultivar in South Africa, known for being a slightly taller, more resilient version of the classic Cavendish. It is an ideal choice for Gqeberha gardens due to its high yield and ability to withstand our coastal winds better than more fragile varieties.
The Urban Farm Workhorse: This variety is a favourite for home growers because it produces large, cylindrical bunches containing up to 300 evenly sized "grocery-style" bananas.
Fruit Profile: Produces long fruit fingers (up to 20cm) with a creamy, sweet interior. The fruit is excellent for fresh eating, baking, or smoothies.
Requirements:
- Climate: While tropical, the Williams variety is more cold-tolerant than other cultivars and handles sub-optimal conditions well.
- Sun: Requires full sun or partial afternoon shade to fuel its rapid growth.
- Soil: Needs well-drained, rich soil with a pH between 6.5 and 8. Use our Triple Mix Farm Soil for best results when planting in-ground.
- Watering: Bananas are thirsty! Keep the soil consistently moist but never waterlogged.
- Size: Grows to a manageable height of 2.5 to 3.7 metres with a spread of up to 2.4 metres.
Harvest: Typically bears fruit within 10 to 12 months of planting.
📍 Pot & Barrel "Die Plaas" Tip:
To get those massive bunches, the Williams banana is a "heavy feeder." We recommend regular applications of our CFT Liquid Fertilizer and a thick layer of Bark Chip Mulch to retain the high levels of moisture this tropical beauty requires
